At MACRMI, we know that patients who have experienced adverse events suffer not only physical harm, but emotional harm as well. But until recently, that emotional harm was a secondary concern -- but now concept has come front and center, as we struggle with the challenge to really help patients and families to get to a place of healing, both physically and emotionally, after medical harm.

Much more needs to be done, and AHRQ sponsored a conference on this topic in September 2016. An article regarding the outcomes of that conference, including recommendations for methods to properly study and address this issue, was recently published in the Joint Commission Journal for Quality and Patient Safety.
